All That Darn Paperwork . . .

Currently getting lost in that vast labyrinth of dead tree that is registering a business.  At several points already I've been ready to just chuck it all into the garbage and go back to my carefree life wherein I burn all my free time watching TV rather than attempting to be productive.  Going out tomorrow in search of real people who can hopefully uncomplicate the situation. . . .

  1. Why are you registering your business? Is it a legal requirement, or is there some benefit to doing it that way? I ask because I'm trying to start a home business of my own, and I am so worried about accidentally doing something illegal. (From your red tape, it sounds like avoiding breaking the law is really REALLY difficult!)

  2. Technically if I want to officially "start a business" without it being shady and under-the-table (like the stockings) I have to register it with the state and the IRS for tax purposes. I have to register my legal trade name, apply for a tax identification number, get a traders license and charge Maryland residents 6% sales tax. I also can't participate in craft shows without a valid traders license or exhibiters affidavit. On the upside, having a tax identification number lets me buy wholesale and get discounts. In the meantime, it's just a pain in the butt, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.
